Target Audience:

Physicians who treat patients with vascular disease

Learning Objectives:

Upon completion of this educational activity, participants should be able to:
• describe the current outcomes data with current generation drug-eluting stents (DES) and their limitations
• describe the design, pharmacokinetics, and current outcomes data with the next group of commercialized DES in the United States
• discuss the safety profile of first and second generation DES
• describe the relative efficacy and deliverability of first and second generation DES
• discuss the Endeavor trials
• appropriately utilize DES in clinically relevant settings in the management of patients with stale and unstable angina
• describe the advantages and disadvantages of DES versus bare metal stents (BMS) in a broad range of patients and coronary artery lesions (the relative contraindications to DES deployment will be discussed)
• recognize the importance of long-term dual antiplatelet therapy in the setting of DES deployment
• describe the characteristics of new BMS that impact favorably on restenosis
• appropriately treat lesions with BMS or DES
• review the latest data on the safety and efficacy for DES in both the on-label and off-label clinical situation
• identify specific patient populations whereby the decision-making regarding the utilization of DES versus BMS may change.
