This activity is sponsored by the
North American Center for Continuing Medical Education.
This activity is supported by an educational grant from Abbott Vascular.
Target Audience:
Neurologists
Learning Objectives:
Upon completion of this educational
activity, participants should be able to:
• Compare current medical management
of carotid stenosis to earlier trials
• Utilize multimodality medical management of carotid
stenosis in the treatment of patients
• Discuss effectiveness of intensive medical therapy,
including Mediterranean diet, smoking cessation,
blood pressure control, lipid-lowering therapy, and
vitamin therapy in regressing carotid plaque and
reducing risk in patients with carotid stenosis
• Review use of transcranial Doppler microemboli for risk
stratification in asymptomatic carotid stenosis and the
decline in microemboli with intensive medical therapy
• Describe the features that make CEA high risk
• Compare the advantages and disadvantages of
stents versus CEA in high surgical risk patients
• Discuss the design and preliminary results of conventional
risk studies comparing CEA and CAS
• Compare the differences between conventional risk
and high risk patients for CAS.
