Target Audience
This activity is geared toward rheumatologists, nurse practitioners and physician assistants who treat patients with osteoarthritis knee pain.
Learning Objectives
Upon completion of this educational activity, participants should be able to:
- discuss the role of intraarticular injections within the armamentarium of treatment options for osteoarthritis knee pain
- describe therapeutic indications and contraindications for intraarticular injections in this patient population
- compare and contrast the mechanisms and dosing regimens of available viscosupplement agents including sodium hyaluronate, hyaluronan and hylan G-F 20
- demonstrate knowledge of recent studies on the use of viscosupplementation in managing osteoarthritis (OA) knee pain
- discuss the efficacy and safety of viscosupplement agents for OA knee pain
- review findings from studies that have compared corticosteroid injections with viscosupplementation in the management of osteoarthritis knee pain
- describe positioning of the patient and anatomical landmarks for intraarticular injections in the knee
- discuss sterile preparation as well as proper needle position, insertion, angle and depth
- review keys to ensuring patient adherence to post-injection instructions
